Andrew Warhola, known as Andy Warhol, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on August 6, 1928. In third grade, Andy had been diagnosed with chorea, the nervous system disease that causes involuntary movements of the extremities, which is said to be a complication of scarlet fever and causes skin pigmentation blotchiness. He became a hypochondriac, developing a fear of hospitals and doctors. He spent a lot of time in bed and he became an outcast at school and his mother became his best friend. When he was stuck in bed, he drew, listened to the radio and collected pictures of movie stars around his bed. Warhol later described this period as very important in the development of his personality, skill-set and preferences. He was an American painter, printmaker, and filmmaker who were a figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. Andy showed early artistic talent and studied Commercial Art at the School of Fine Arts at Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1949, he moved to New York City and began a career in magazine illustration and advertising. Andy started silkscreen printmaking as a technique for making paintings. His earliest silk-screening in painting involved hand-drawn images though this soon progressed to the use of photographically silk-screening in paintings. Before he began his serious art, Andy’s commercial art background also involved techniques for image making that were somewhat related to printmaking techniques. Andy has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, books, feature and documentary films. During the 1960s Andy began to make paintings of iconic American products such as Campbell's Soup Cans and Coca-Cola bottles, as well as paintings of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Troy Donahue, Muhammad Ali and Elizabeth Taylor. He was told he lived "15 minutes of fame". In his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, The Andy Warhol Museum exists in memory of his life and work. Andy Warhol died in February 1987. He was recovering from a procedure and he had a cardiac arrhythmia. His body was taken back to his hometown where he was born. The final thing that happened to recognize Andy forever was in 1987, in accordance with his will, Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts began. The Foundation serves as the official Estate of Andy Warhol, but also has a mission "to foster innovative artistic expression and the creative process" and is "focused primarily on supporting work of a challenging and often experimental nature."
